Dodge
Wheelchair Vans
_______________________________________________
Sometimes referred to as the original or first minivan, almost everyone has ridden in a Dodge Caravan at some point or another. It is the vehicle people usually picture in their mind when someone mentions a minivan. It has been ubiquitous in the US since the first generation was released in 1984. For these reasons, the Dodge Caravan was chosen to be the first mass produced wheelchair accessible minivan. To this day, Dodge wheelchair vans are prevalent and for solid reasons. This page will provide information on each generation of Dodge Grand Caravan wheelchair van.

Third Generation (1996-2000)

The Third Generation of Dodge Grand Caravan was released in 2001. This generation marked a departure from the square style of the previous generations in favor of a more rounded, aerodynamic style. In addition to more interior room, the Third Generation introduced a number of innovations, including a driver's side sliding door (optional initially, to become standard equipment later), a first for Dodge and a non-compact minivan for North America. This was beneficial because it made it easier for passengers to get in and out of the vehicle, as well as caretakers maneuvering a wheelchair inside the vehicle.

Fourth Generation (2001-2007)

With such a dramatic change in styling between the Second and Third Generations, Dodge stayed a little more conservative when desigining the Fourth Generation of Dodge Grand Caravan, retaining the rounded, aerodynamic styling and only making a few tweaks. This generation saw the appearance of an optional factory installed rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a single-disc player mounted below the A/C controls. For a wheelchair passenger sitting in the back of the van, this would make road trips much more enjoyable. More importantly though, the Fourth Generation of Dodge Grand Caravan introduced power sliding doors and a power rear hatch as options. While these may seem like minor conveniences for a lot of people, they made an improtant difference in how the Dodge Grand Caravan wheelchair vans were converted for wheelchair access, as well as increased the independence of any wheelchair driver of a Dodge Grand Caravan wheelchair acecssible van. The introduction of the factory installed power sliding door meant that wheelchair van manufacturers no longer had to add an aftermarket system for opening and closing the door with power. It also meant a more reliable system for the person using the wheelchair van, as well as being covered by the Dodge warranty. The power rear hatch increased the independence and convenience of wheelchair-bound drivers as they could open and close the rear hatch of the van with the push of a button.

Fifth Generation (2008-2020)

The Fifth Generation of Dodge Grand Caravan was the final generation. It was also the most refined and overall best Grand Caravan released. This generation brought major style changes, opting for a sportier, more SUV-like appearance. Furthermore, the Dodge Grand Caravan received a new engine, a new transmission, and updated suspension that was smoother and offered better handling. Other changes include extra sound insulation, acoustic glass, new seats, softer-touch surfaces, new LED ambient lighting and halogen projector headlamps with LED accents. The extra sound insulation and acoustic glass were notable upgrades because, on average, wheelchair accessible vehicles have a noisier interior than an unconverted version of the same vehicle. All these features and improvements combined to give the Dodge Grand Caravan wheelchair van a great send off after many years as America's best known minivan.
