Chrysler minivans have been linked to Dodge minivans for a long time, and for most of that time, the connection was real, as the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country were essentially the same vehicle, but with different wrappings. Chrysler has always been touted as being the luxury alternative to a Dodge van, and that holds true. However, in 2017 that changed when Chrysler discontinued the Town & Country, and released the Pacifica, which was quite a departure from the Town & Country. This page will provide information on each generation of Chrysler Town & Country wheelchair vans and Chrysler Pacifica wheelchair van.

-For the sake of relevance, we will only cover generations of this vehicle that were converted for wheelchair access and are still widely available on the handicap accessible vehicle market.

Third generation (1996–2000)

The Chrysler Town & Country had already been around for a few generations before we saw them being converted for wheelchair access. Very similar to the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Grand Caravan (both owned by Chrysler), the Chrysler sets itself apart by being a more luxury option and coming with more standard features at lower trim levels. It was during this generation that van manufacturers started adding a sliding door on the driver sie of the vehicle, making the vehicle easier to get in an out of. This van was a good match for a wheelchair van converison for a few reasons. First, the Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth vans were very common, so parts are widely available. A manufactuer doesn't want to use a platform where parts may be hard to get a hold of, which could in turn negatively effect the consumer. Another reason was the interior design paired with the driver sliding door, which makes maneuvering inside the vehicle and getting in and out much easier.

With the fourth Generation of the Chrysler Town & Country, not much changed visually, with the van's body retaining its rounded design features. However, in this generation Chrysler provided more powerful engines while retaining the 4-speed automatic transmission. This is the first generation that offered entertainment features like available Bluetooth connectivity and safety features like a driver side knee air-bag and side curtain air bags. Since there wasn't much competition in the minivan market at the time, Chrysler didn't seem to innovate much. However, with minivans arriving on the market from competing manufacturers such as Toyota and Honda, Chrysler decided they'd have to make more substantial upgrade on their next generation of Town & Country to try and keep their dominance in the minivan market.

The Fifth Generation of the Chrysler Town & Country marked a dramatic departure from all previous generations in terms of exterior design, interior layout, available engines, options, and more. It was by the the largest upgrade across generations for the Town & Country, and consumers took notice. This model quickly became popular as a luxury option for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, with many trim levels coming standard with leather, navigation, bluetooth connectivity for phone & audio, and most importantly, more interior space, which is of utmost importance in any wheelchair accessible vehicle.

In 2017, instead of releasing another generation of the Town & Country, Chrysler went big and replaced the Town & Country with a new model, the Chrysler Pacifica. The Pacifica was meant to change the entire paradigm of what people know about minivans in the segment. Among its differences from the Town & Country is a new platform and a design carrying a sportier appearance inspired by crossovers. The Chrysler Pacifica came with many new features such as electric power steering, hands free opening power sliding doors, and automatic parking, as well as safety tecnology such as LaneSense Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist and Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking. These new technologies and safety features really set the Pacifica apart from the Town & Country, and best of all, it has substantially more interior space than a Town & Country which is always important in a wheelchair accessible vehicle. In terms of interior space, the Chrysler Pacifica wheelchair van could finally compete with the Toyota Sienna, which had the largest interior space for a wheelchair minivan for quite a few years.
